The today existing organ of Sebalduskirche was built in 1975/76 by Willi Peter (Cologne). It consists of a large three-manual organ with 71 stops on the ground floor in the hall choir and a movable choir organ with 12 stops. Both instruments have mechanical key action, but are also electrically playable from a movable four-manual console.
The Sebalduskirche is one of the main venues of the traditional International Organ Week Nuremberg – Musica Sacra (ION). We are very pleased that the workshop for organ building Mühleisen was selected for the renovation of the Peter organ in cooperation with organ builder Dominik Friedrich (Oberasbach) for all works related to the sound. The steps were carried out in cooperation with OSV Martin Schiffel and KMD Bernhard Buttmann.
Apart from some changes to the compositions of the mixtures, only little has been changed in the disposition: in the Great: Flûte harmonique 8 ‘and Gamba 8’ replace the stops Spitzgamba 8 ‘and Großnasat 5 1/3’, in the Swell Organ the Terzflöte 3 1/5 ‘ is replaced by an Oboe 8 ‘ with turnable hats.
The careful re-voicing of the generously designed instrument aimed at more voluminous basic sound with optimal sound fusion of the individual voices. These properties have now made the vast majority of organ literature more convincing. A pleasing side effect is that after the revoicing the organ has also reached the last places in the main nave, which had been in the shadow of sound before.
